DIY Carpet Installation Tips

DIY Carpet Installation Do you want to save a few bucks while installing new carpeting in your home? You can do it by taking the DIY approach and putting the carpet in on your own. Here are some tips that will help you to successfully install carpet in any room in your home.

Clean your subfloor before you get started.

Before you do anything, it’s important for you to clean the subfloor and remove any dirt, dust, and debris from it. The last thing you want to do is to install carpeting only to realize you left something on the subfloor beneath. You should also remove any doors in the room you are carpeting since they’ll just get in your way.

Install tackless strips around the edge of the room and put down padding.

Tackless strips should be placed around the outside of your room in order to hold the padding and carpeting in place. Do not put the strips in between doorways since the tacks from them could potentially come up through the carpet and cause an injury. Once you have your strips down, you can install your padding and trim it down to size.

Trim your carpet down to the correct size.

In addition to trimming your padding, you should also trim your carpet. You should do this in a larger part of your home where you’ll be able to cut the carpeting. Make sure you take the proper measurements so that your carpet is cut to be the right size. From there, you can bring the carpeting into the room where it’s going to be installed.

Install carpeting and stretch it properly.

At this point, it will be time to install your carpeting. Use a knee kicker to start attaching your carpeting to your tackless strips on one side of the room and trim the carpet accordingly to remove any excess. Use a power stretcher to attach the carpeting to the strips located on the other side of the room. Your carpeting should be nice and tight when it’s installed.
